I'm sure there are hundreds of legitimate email senders among the hundreds of phish spammers at Ev1. I'd be glad to let their email through. Just Fill out this form and I'll be glad to "whitelist" your particular server, while you wait. It only takes a minute. I'll even help you figure out what IP address your mail is sent from. Call me at (408) 929-7601. Or send email from some other service to gis AT greens.org. You'll be helping us refine our spam blocking database. I might even send you a free CD for your trouble.

You're probably reading this because your email was blocked by Greens.org or a related domain and you're wondering why.

We've been receiving more "phish" spam from IP space owned by Ev1.net than from any other source, for months. It's a new IP address every few hours. Seems to be mostly criminals exploiting Web servers with security problems, parasites, not actual customers of Ev1's customers. Phish spam is an organized criminal activity. It's how most identity theft occurs in the US today.

We also get a lot of advance fee fraud spam from Ev1. That's the Nigerian widow who wants to share a quarter of the loot her husband stole from the people of Nigeria but she needs to use your bank account to do it. If you agree to that part, she'll need to borrow a few grand to get the deal rolling. It's a big industry in Nigeria. Every few years an American goes to Nigeria looking for his money, and they murder him. Sometimes it's a lottery you won without even entering it. Sometimes it's another desperately poor nation.

This morning I called Ev1 and spoke to "Andrew." He told me Ev1 knows all about this problem, has three employees who work abuse, and Ev1's position as the largest single source of phish spam on the Internet is just fine with Ev1. He said if I was getting too much spam from Ev1 I should go ahead and block email from that space. He also said Ev1 provides NO SECURITY SERVICES AT ALL to its hosting customers, and isn't about to change that policy.

Maybe you're one of the lucky few who don't get much spam yet, and you don't think spam is anything to worry about. Wrong. Spam is destroying the public email system. If it succeeds, the replacement system will be centrally controlled, and it will have back doors for government surveillance.

You probably never heard of Ev1 or Everyone's Internet before. Apparently, most of their customers are bargain basement Web hosting "companies" who rent a few servers at Ev1 and pretend to be an actual Web hosting provider. That company you thought was your Web hosting operator may be just some guy with a PO box and voice mail, and a day job, "reselling" or fronting for Ev1 in his off time. Sometimes there are several layers of "virtual ISP" between you and Ev1. That picture on his Web site of his giant, space-age looking data center could be a picture of anybody's data center.

It's not your fault your email got blocked. You had no idea how your Web hosting provider's Internet provider's reckless and irresponsible business decisions are damaging the email system. We're not blocking you. We're not even blocking your Web host. We're blocking Ev1, and EV1 doesn't mind. If that's causing a problem for you, maybe you should speak to the people who chose EV1 for you. Maybe your business shouldn't be located in the middle of one of the largest senders of Internet fraud spam. There are thousands of well-run Internet hosting providers, and many of them don't even charge any more than EV1 does. Next time, choose more carefully. Choose a facilities-based provider, not some marketing guy at the wrong end of an MLM pyramid. Choose a provider who doesn't host lots of phish spammers. Choose a provider who's got enough abuse staff to control the abusers on its network.

Thanks for your patience.
